Jury service is mandatory, and anyone called to jury duty who is not excused prior to the date on their summons may face stiff fines or even time in jail for contempt. Being a full-time student typically doesn't qualify as an excuse (unless you're in high school), so it may not be possible for you to get out of jury duty entirely just because you're a student. However, many states allow full-time students to postpone their service until school is not in session. [1] X Research source

While being a student won’t automatically excuse you from serving jury duty, you can use your status as a full-time student to get your jury duty rescheduled. If your state allows students to reschedule jury duty, gather your student ID and any other proof that you’re a full-time student and call the court office to request a deferral. For federal court juries, you still need to finish the juror questionnaire and send it in before the deadline. Since the clerk will likely ask to reschedule your jury duty when you request it, have your school schedule handy so you can tell them when your summer or winter breaks are. If you’re able to get a deferral, wait for your new summons to arrive by mail. For more help from our Legal co-author, like how to be excused from jury duty for other reasons, read on.
